Sleep, Zinc and Halloween!

In this blog issue:
Sleep, Zinc and Halloween and a great Trail Mix Recipe at the end!

It's that time of year again that makes my dogs bark non-stop as the kids trick-or-treat through the neighborhood or my neighbor has their "last to the wee hours of the morning" haunted house in their back yard.  It's a time I don't look forward to I have to say because I become sleep deprived.   So if you are in the rush of things or just sleep deprived like me - try to get extra rest now - especially with weather changing to cooler temperatures and allergies and flus running around.

Did you know that sleep helps repair the body, keeps the heart healthy, reduces stress, improves memory and helps with weight!  Check that out on the web - but try to get your zzzzzs in!

And, for times when you don't and you are getting runned down and under the weather - try zinc!  Whenever I start getting a sore throat, I try a zinc supplement.   You see zinc in lozenges so we thought we'd go straight to the source and get a zinc supplement.  But below is information I took from The Benefits of Zinc website.  Google zinc and see all the benefits this mineral has for you - you may be surprised!

"To fight colds, use a zinc nasal spray four times a day or suck on zinc lozenges that contain 15 to 25 mg of zinc gluconate every two to four hours as soon as you notice symptoms. Stop when symptoms subside. Consuming zinc on an empty stomach can cause nausea, so take zinc supplements with food. " -

Have a safe Halloween this year.  Times have changed and with offenders in neighborhoods, recalls alone on foods etc - think about ways to keep you and your kiddos safe.  A local carnival, a church festival or just going to a few houses you know.  Once you are home, put in a great movie to watch and have some snacks and an entire family game night.  Parents, put down those computers, PDAs, Kindles, Gamers etc. and enjoy your family.  You never know when the last time is you may see someone - we aren't guaranteed a tomorrow so enjoy today!

Below is a semi-healthy snack you can even try which I of course found...on the web!  It's a great alternative to handing out candy, or if you are on the run, it's a great snack for you too!  Until next time...enjoy!

Trick or Treat Trail Mix

Journal as: 1 serving low-fat cracker, 1 serving dried fruit, and 1 serving nuts.
1 cup of pretzel sticks or mini pretzel twists

1 cup orange or black dried fruit (raisins or dried apricots or dried peaches)
1/2 cup Halloween M&Ms (optional)
  • Combine all the ingredients in a big bowl and toss to mix well and enjoy
Or, as a healthier alternative to handing out candy:

Can Lack of B12 Cause Havoc? You Bet....

Hi All -
Be sure to check out Amanda's comment on B12 and her experiences.   You know we all forget that certain mineral and vitamin deficiencies can really cause havoc in our lives and as she points out, foods you thought contained things, just may not!  So take a look at her comment - maybe you can benefit from it too.

"I don't know how else to post your your blog other than posting a comment. I recently found out that I have a B12 deficiency. I just wanted to urge everyone to check your breakfast cereal/granola to make sure it is fortified -- and includes B12. I have eaten Kashi brand cereal for a long time, and recently switched to granola. To my surprise, neither were fortified! I was very surprised to realize that all of the Kashi brand cereals that I checked were not fortified!! Now, this alone did not make me B12 deficient, but it certainly didn't help. B12 is found naturally in animal products: fish, meats, milk, cheese, eggs (yolks) but not so much in yogurt. B12 deficiency can cause permanent damage such as nerve damage and memory loss. I suspect I might have some short term memory loss (I had to be reminded to pick up my son from his speech class, twice within a month. Several times a day I have to check things such as "Did I turn on the dishwasher?", "Why did I walk into this room? What was I going to do?" I've also noticed things like no remembering if I shampoo'd my hair. I know everyone has things like this from time-to-time, but mine seems worse in the last 3-4 weeks and SEVERAL times a day. Two weeks ago, I got really sick with a high fever, and I went to the doctor. I explained to the doctor about my persistent fatigue. She did blood tests and found that I had low B12. I'm now prescribed B12 shots every other week for 6 weeks, and then I have to get re-tested. I started taking a multi-vitamin again religiously 2 weeks before getting sick. I highly suggest a multi-vitamin including B12 on a daily basis. When I went in for my first B12 shot, my hands were practically un-usable. I could barely drive, open doors, and a number of other daily activities. About 45 minutes after getting the B12 shot, my hand/finger pain greatly reduced. It became more a "tingle". I'm hoping that this is a sign that it's not permanent nerve damage, but hoping it will get better with high levels of B12. About 3 days ago, I've started noticing some slight pain with the tingling in my hands. I get my next B12 shot tomorrow. So, I'll be interested to see if it gets better soon after the shot. I've definitely made dietary changes (ie. fortified granola, eating more meat, and eggs.) I'm working towards eating things that are healthy and fresh and staying away from processed food. This really has nothing to do with my low B12, but more the idea of being healthy."

Great post Amanda - Thanks for the info and keep those types of things coming!
On another note, a great B12/B6/Folic Acid product I found is from Trivita.  You have to order it online at http://www.trivita.com/.  It is a sublingual pill (goes under your tongue) for faster service into your blood stream and doesn't have to be digested like a pill.  The combination of the 3 products is supposed to offer:
  • Increased energy and stamina
  • Increased mental clarity
  • Decreased dangerous homocysteine levels, which lessens the risk of developing heart disease and Alzheimer's Disease
  • Emotional balance
Now that homocysteine is what makes cholesterol "stick" so if you can decrease that - sounds like a plan to me!

I hope Amanda's article and this blog helps someone in some way.  Until then, be inspired and healthy!!

Don't be a prisoner to allergies!

Life is short - and if you are like me, I was tired of living it miserably.  Please note that I am not paid to endorse any products or that. I'm just trying to help others that have been suffering and to inspire you to well being and a better life.

Start today trying something other than those over the counter, man made pills and get back to some whole foods, and natural supplements - you've got nothing to lose and so much of your life to gain back.

For now, I want to inspire people close to my heart - - allergy sufferers....

I have had chronic allergies for the past 10 or more years. And, unless you've had chronic non-stop allergies - it's hard to sympathize or understand what one goes through. A typical morning could be a box of tissues, coughing, eyes watering and that was just at 9 am! Working with such issues is another matter. By noon, I finally felt better. It has been a struggle and a quality of life that I just did not like.

However, there are some natural products that have been helping now. One is called Congest Away which we found at Whole Foods. Another is NSC 24 which we found by watching Doug Kaufman on TV. I have to say the NSC 24 Beta Glucan works for me!! Finally - no more boxes of tissues per day, but maybe one tissue for the entire day.  The NSC 24 does have to be ordered online at http://www.nsc24.com/.  .  Bascially the way they described the product is like putting glasses on your body.  The body can see that hey, that is an allergen - just let it go - don't create histamines and get you all congested and such,  just ignore that.  I believe I remember a child with really bad asthma that they said took it and helped her, but you could need to contact them directly with all your concern or questions to see who can take it and what all it helps.  I don't know what all is in it - I just know it has made my allergies almost completely go away.  I'm calling this my little miracle pill because without it - I was miserable daily.  With it - I am gaining back a great quality of life.  It doesn't come cheap - but what is feeling better worth to you?

Of course talk to your own doctor before doing anything etc.  I'm not making any claims,  and as I said, I am not getting paid for endorsnig or getting anything in return.  They don't even know I'm endorsing them!  I'm just stating I know it works for me and wanted to share in case it can work for you.

Good luck!  And remember, be inspired by something around you.  A sunset, a friend, a way of life, a recipe, a book - just find something today to make you smile!  Until next time....
